Senior Research Scientist Agronomy & Farming Systems
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Queensland is seeking a Senior Research Scientist Agronomy Farming Systems expert to lead critical research in cotton agronomy. This fixed-term, full-time role extends until 30 June 2029 and offers a salary package of $131,466 – $141,028 per annum, including superannuation and leave loading.

As part of a dedicated team, you will help drive sustainable productivity improvements in Queensland’s cotton and broadacre cropping industries. Role Responsibilities
As a Senior Research Scientist Agronomy Farming Systems, you will:
- Lead field-based agronomic research focused on cotton productivity and system efficiency across southern Queensland.
- Coordinate the implementation and evaluation of long-season and ratoon cotton trials, as well as canopy management technologies.
- Collaborate with government agencies, growers, and CottonInfo extension services to facilitate adoption of new practices.
- Examine the impact of agronomic approaches on soil-borne diseases, especially verticillium wilt.
- Supervise technical staff and manage a research budget effectively.
This role involves occasional out-of-hours, weekend, and remote work. Travel within Queensland is expected as part of stakeholder collaboration and trial site visits.

Required Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, you must have:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in agricultural science, applied science, rural science, or equivalent with a focus on agronomic research.
- Demonstrated field research experience in broadacre cropping systems.
- A current ‘C’ class driver’s licence, with the ability to operate a manual vehicle.
You should also have excellent project management abilities, strong communication skills, and the capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
